Syzygium 'Cascade' (Weeping Lilly Pilly)
This is an Australian native shrub that is far better known as a ‘Weeping Lilly Pilly.’ Its parentage is a cross between
Syzygium luehmannii and syzygium willsonii. The Lilly Pilly family encompasses a wide range of shapes and sizes, and
‘Cascade’ is one of the very best.
It develops into a rounded, very thick and bushy shrub with gently weeping branches. The mature height is about 3 metres by about 1.5 metres wide. This is a shrub that can be pruned to shape, but one that can also be left alone to take on its own lovely free form. The root system is non-invasive and these decorative shrubs can be grown in full sun or slight shade as understorey plants.
The foliage is extremely glossy with a shiny apple green look in the mature leaves. The continual flushes of new growth are a real highlight as they are in shades of dusky pink with bronze colourings. These new foliage flushes make the Lilly Pilly Cascade look absolutely fantastic. Plants such as Clivea, Bromeliads, Plectranthus, Liriope Evergreen Giant and Native Violets all look really good with this Syzygium. The flowers are fluffy pink pom poms with a dusting of gold on the tips of each anther. They attract nectar loving birds.
Grow Syzygium Cascade as a screening hedge in sun to slight shade. Being so thick, it makes a great screen. It can be planted singly and under pruned to form a small weeping tree under planted with complimenting low shrubs and perennials, or it can be used as a small street tree/shrub. Fertilise every spring with an organic fertiliser and trim if you need to control the shape. Water well during extended dry periods.
The Syzygium Cascade – Weeping Lilly Pilly – is a deserved choice for Proven Favourites™ selection as it is a reliable and tough shrub that looks great all year round.
