Backhousia citriodora (Lemon Myrtle) has a beautiful display of fluffy white flowers aromatic citrus foliage is tough and hardy easy to grow and doesn't attract pests or diseases.
Type and Habit: Evergreen Australian Native shrub or tree Average Height: 6 – 8m but often quite smaller and hedges very well. Soil: Prefers a moist soil with plenty of organic matter, the plant is smaller in less favourable conditions. Tolerates wet conditions. Aspect: Frost tender when young then tolerates light frost. Full sun to semi shade. Foliage: Dark green lance-shaped foliage. These leaves contain large amounts of citral which when crushed emit very strong lemon scents. Also popular ‘Bush Tucker’ when leaves are powdered and used to flavour. Flowers: The flowers are fluffy and white and borne in clusters making a stunning display in early summer and these too emit a lemon perfume during the evenings. Uses: Flowering shade tree, screen or hedge, street tree, topiary work.
