Basil Sweet Ocimum basilicum

Type and Habit:  Annual herb.
Average Height:  300-600mm
Cultivation:  Well drained, moist, fertile soil. Mulch well and water regularly. Full sun to part shade. Excellent in pots. Frequent picking ensures a continual supply of fresh new foliage, discourage flowering by pinching out flower buds as they appear. Good companion plant for tomatoes. Basil is best treated as an annual and grown spring/summer/autumn, it dislikes cold weather.
Culinary Uses: Spicy and aromatic with a mild anise flavour, Sweet Basil is excellent with tomatoes and tomato dishes, vegetables, chicken and fish and of course pesto sauce. Used fresh or dried.
